Afton Oak Studio is a cozy, hands-on workshop space for adults who want to slow down, work with their hands, and discover the joy of making. Each class is unhurried, beginner-friendly, and designed to help you build confidence as you try new crafts and leave with a piece that feels uniquely yours.

THE STUDIO

Afton Oak Studio is the creative practice of Amanda Romero, a Colorado Springs artist and workshop instructor whose work spans ceramics, photography, cyanotype printing, macramé, pottery, embroidery, mixed media, and more.
Named after the oak trees of her Houston childhood neighborhood, the studio is a gathering place for adults who want to slow down, work with their hands, and reconnect with the quiet joy of making things by hand. No experience is required; classes are designed to be approachable, clear, and beginner-friendly, with plenty of guidance along the way.

Discover the magic of cyanotype! A historic photographic printing process that uses light to create bold, one-of-a-kind Prussian-blue prints on fabric.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll design and create your own fabric prints on a pre-treated small makeup bag and tote bag. Experiment with stencils, textured materials, found objects, botanical pieces, and other creative tools as you build a composition that is uniquely yours. Once your design is arranged, you’ll expose it in a UV light box to create a striking blue-and-white image, then rinse the fabric in water to reveal your finished work.
The areas exposed to UV light will turn a deep blue, while the areas covered by your objects and stencils will remain light, creating high-contrast silhouettes, patterns, and layers of texture. Each print is shaped by your arrangement, the materials you choose, and the way light reaches the fabric—meaning no two finished pieces will look exactly alike.
I’ll guide you through the full process, including how cyanotype works, how to plan your design, create a composition, use stencils and objects successfully, expose your fabric in the UV light box, rinse and develop your fabric, and care for your finished pieces.
No prior experience is needed. Come ready to play with pattern, texture, shape, and light—and leave with a handmade cyanotype makeup bag and tote bag, plus the confidence to keep experimenting on your own.
